Madrid lodging/car rental

Can anyone recommend a quiet, clean, and inexpensive hostal or pension in Madrid?

Also, I'm seeking advice on where to rent a car in Madrid to travel South with. I don't want to rent from the airport or downtown stations. Any tips?

Thanks,

Sarah

Hi Sarah,
My daughter and I stayed at Hostal Corbero, Calle Cervantes. www.hostalcorbero.com

Quiet, clean, and well-located, especially for the art museums. I posted a review with photos on TripAdvisor. Paid 50Euros per night for a dbl with bath in Nov. '05. Another good one across the street, same owner - www.hostaldulcenea.com Feel free to email me with any questions or further info on this or other aspects of your trip. Have fun!

I'll assume you're planning to head south on the A4 for Malaga-Granada. If so, a good place to pick up a car might be the southern Madrid suburb of Pinto, which right on the A4. There's also good lateral access to the A3 to Murcia and Alicante. Check at www.carjet.co.uk (a company we've used with good success) for their rates. Pinto is on line C3 of the Madrid regional commuter rail network from Atocha station. If you come to Atocha by subway, you'll actually pass by the regional train lines before you get to the main station itself. If you come in the main station, check at the info desk, and the very helpful clerks will point you in the right direction. C3 trains run about every 15 minutes during morning and afternoon rush hours, and every half hour thereafter. I'm not sure of fares, but they can't be much more than 3-5 Euro.

You may also want to look at Hostal Cruz Sol....about two minutes away from Puerto del Sol and 30 seconds away from Playa Mayor....but on a nice little sqare off the main access roads between those two points, so very quiet. http://www.hostalcruzsol.com/index.english.html. 50 Euros for a double...e-mail them first to confirm you can get one of the rooms with the ensuite bathroom.
