We will be in Madrid for 4 nights and want to take day trips to Toledo and salamanca or segovia, on different days. Are these side trips doable in a day? What train station would one use for these destinations?
Joanne - I have taken daytrips from Madrid to Toledo and Segovia, and plan to daytrip Madrid to Avila on my next visit. By train they are well less tan an hour, plus a short bus ride into town. I've not been to Salamanca, but the others are easily doable as daytrips. I went to Toledo from Atocha and to Segovia from Charmatin, so staying close to the station isn't an issue. Either station can be reached by Metro from central Madrid in just a few minutes. My last visit to Madrid (October 2011) I stayed at the Hotel Plaza Mayor, a very reasonable place.
thanks so much for getting back to me. I appreciate it
Consider the bus. More convenient, cheaper, and sometimes faster. Trains in Spain tend to stop on the edge of town requiring additional local transportation to get to the center of town. The bus will drop you in the center of town. We tend to use more buses than trains in Spain.
Toledo and Segovia are great day trips. Salamanca can be done but IMHO ,with the distance involved and the sites to see, it would be better as an overnighter. We took the train to Toledo for the day and on a different day DROVE to Segovia, Avila and then stayed overnight in Salamanca. With the amount of time that you have I would probably spend it in Madrid, Toledo and Segovia.
