Madrid layover

Because of airline schedule changes we have a Monday afternoon until Tuesday noon stop over in Madrid. The airline is putting us up in a hotel, but we don't yet know where. Any suggestions on things to see or do for a couple of senior citizens?

You could use the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus to see the Prado Museum, palace, etc., the bus makes it really easy to move from one site to the other. The ticket is good for 24 hrs. Read thru the Madrid section in Rick's Spain book to familiarize yourselves with the city. Don't miss Picasso's 'Guernica' at the Museo Reina Sofia, very thought provoking.

Airline will probably book a room at the airport. It is a 30 min ride into the heart of Madrid - taxi 30-35E. You could ask at the desk of the hotel if they offer a shuttle into the core. Yes the Prado is a must as well as the area around Plaza Mayor - also from here walking distance to the palace.
Enjoy. It is a lovely city

Hop on Hop off bus is a good idea for a short visit....and maybe one of the three main art museums, depending on your tastes. The Prado (12th-18th century, including Goya's "2nd" and "3rd of May, 1808"), the Thyssen-Bornemisza (13th-20th century), or the Reina Sofia (modern, abstract, pop art, with the previously-mentioned "Guernica.") Go for a walk round the Plaza Mayor and have dinner and/or tapas in or around Plaza Santa Ana. Stay up late, since dinner isn't until 9 pm, and you won't have time to do anything except go to the airport the following morning.
