Can you give us some idea of budget, number of travelers, what part of Madrid you want to be in?

You do not mention your budget. Here are two budget friendly recommendations. Look into Hostal Acapulco or Hotel Europa. They are very close to each other, close to underground stations, well located by both the Plaza del Sol and Plaza Mayor. We have used Hostal Acapulco on three different occasions, small but clean with good rooms and bathrooms. It is on the fourth floor of a building near Gran Vía. There is a small elevator. In Spain hostales are small family owned hotels. It is not a youth hostel. Nearby is the Hotel Europa. I have not stayed there but I have eaten in its restaurant. If you are looking for a hotel then check it out. Both places get very good reviews. In Madrid it is easy to get around on the metro or the buses. We even took a public bus out to El Escorial with no problems. Enjoy your trip.

We stayed at Hotel Europa on Plaza del Sol. It was easy to get to from the airport and is very much in the heart of everything. It's a nice hotel and I highly recommend it.

Hostel Montecarlo and Hostal Phillip IV...both on Ave Gran Via, near the subway at Cale Montera and Gran Via...walking distance to most of the sites. Both are clean and reasonable as well. I have stayed in both. Hotel Agumar is a block or so from Atocha. A hotel, not a hostel. The hostels mentioned above are clean, safe, small, without the grand lobby, swimming pool or restaurant on premises.

I've sent you a PM with a link to many hotels and hostels in Madrid. The small family run hostales are a good value for the money are plentiful.

We stayed at Hotel Mora which is across from the main train station. It was very nice and great price!

I broke one of Ricks rules and stayed at a chain hotel close to the Atocha station. However, I used my points so it was free. It was nice and really close to the station. It was the AC hotel and you can find it on the Marriott website.
