We are spending one night/day in Madrid in April before catching a flight home. What would be a good area to stay in for good tapas bars, historic buildings and plazas, shopping, etc.? Any hotel suggestions in this area?
I usually stay at the Hostal Cruz Sol on Plaza Santa Cruz, very close to Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor, but a nice quiet area. Great tapas bars can be found at Plaza Santa Ana, about a 10 minute stroll away. You're also about another 15 minute walk from the big museums around Paseo de Prado....the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza, and the Reina Sofia. Great shopping in the pedestrian malls off Puerta del Sol. Easy to get to other spots via the Metro.
Hotel Mediodia is right next to Reina Sofia, 4 blks from Prado, 3 from a magnif park called Buen Retiro, a few score feet from a metro stop and across a VERY busy street from Atocha Station. Everything you mention is nearby. Goood rates. Very popular, good breakfast.
I recently stayed at the Hotel Europa, the one Rick stays in and was highlighted in his tv show.
It was absolutely wonderful! The service was great and they also have an inside/outside patio cafe for great food and/or people watching. The location is right off Puerta del Sol, a short walk to everything.
A single was 65 euros last month.
