Madrid - hotels

looking for recommendations on Madrid hotels ... close to shopping, restaurants, cultural sights, etc.. Prefer smaller boutique hotel over a 'North American' style but still want great beds, roomy, and very clean. A great view and maybe restaurant/bar on property is preferred but not essential. Would like wi-fi and close to great resaurants.

We stayed at the II Castillas in Madrid and would stay there next time. Large room with a TRUE king-size bed. Large bathroom with a window that opens! Excellent buffet breakfast included and a very nice lounge and restaurant on main floor. A great tapas bar just around the corner. Corte Ingles store in the next block with everything you'll need. The staff was friendly and helpful. Check it out: http://madrid-hoteldoscastillas.com/ Hasta la vista!

Bob, just as an FYI: The official website for "Hotel II Castillas" in Madrid is http://www.hoteldoscastillas-madrid.com/ (with more photos, info, and reviews). The one you list above for this hotel is operated by a booking website. But you're right, it is very well located between the Plaza de Callao on Gran Vía and the Puerta del Sol. Saludos, MadridMan @ you-know-where!!

Thanks for the info. What is the name of the bar next door with the penguin statue? The place has great food specials and the waiter, Placido, was a lot of fun and a poet! I think he's originally from Segovia....he gave us some tips on things to see there.

Second the recommendation for Hotel Europa. Reasonable & close to everything. Beautiful hotel!

So I went to book at room at Hotel Europa and found that it is more expensive (220eur/night double delux) than the room where my husband will be staying the previous week, at The Intercontinental. There, I can get a standard room for 132EUR or the whole way up to a club room with free breakfast and WIFI for 191EUR! I was hoping for a more local and personal place to stay but those prices simply can't be beat! Comments? Thank you!

Then try Hostal Acapulco on Plaza del Carmen. This is not a hostel but a small hotel like you want in a larger building with two other good hotels. It's just a couple of blocks up and over from Hotel Europa, is cheap, and is super clean. Balconies overlook the plaza. Check reviews and photos on tripadvisor...highly-rated. Our quad just over a year ago was €85, so a double is going to be less yet. It's not fancy at all but is quite nice.
