madrid hotel by Puerta del Sol

Bethany....I always stay in the Hostal Cruz Sol, on Plaza Santa Cruz, about 5 minutes from Sol, and about 2 minutes from Plaza Mayor. But because it's just a block south of the main routes between Mayor and Sol, it remains quiet. A single with bathroom is 40 Euro per night...a double, 52 Euro. Several little cafes around for breakfast...dinners at Plaza Mayor....and if you get homesick, McDonalds and Burger King are about 2 blocks away :) You can reserve on line at http://www.hostalcruzsol.com

We stayed at the Best Western Hotel Arosa which is real near Puerta del Sol. Booked two rooms online thru Best Western's website.

I second what my Canadian twin recommends, lol, (I say this because we have similar posts when it comes to Madrid, same recommendations etc, except we have never met, but I guess like minds..., you know the story!!!) Hostal Cruz Sol is great, also I've read quite a few posts lately the the Hotel Europa is good, it's right on the north side of Puerta del Sol, one thing though I think there is still a lot of construction work still going on in that area so staying a few blocks off is recommended. I also recommend Hostal Adriano, it too is just a 2 minute walk from Sol. A good website for Madrid and all of Spain is www.madridman.com, though the site says madrid he has developed it for all of Spain, it's built and maintained by an American who lives in Madrid so it is up to date with lots of good info.

Madrid is very easy to get around, so if you don't stay near Del Sol, don't worry! If anything Sol is the most touristy part. I stayed at hotel abalu and booked online. The staff was very helpful and communicated the whole time up til my arrival.
