I just discovered I might have an opportunity to be in Madrid from April 7 - 25. Originally I was going to be there only 4 nights, and I'm booked into Rick's recommended Pension Arcos. However, now that I might be there for an extended time, I wonder if anyone knows a way to do this more cheaply, yet have a safe, clean place to leave my things during the day.

Rent an apartment. We've had good success in Madrid, among other places, with homelidays.co.uk. They're a listing service, so you'll deal directly with the owners. Look for ones with lots of photos and lots of reviews.
Check out Pension Retiro. We stayed there awhile back and thought it was great. Nothing fancy, but definitely well-situated (basically right across the street from the Prado) and Senora Antonia was a great host (though she doesn't speak English). We would definitely go back, and the rooms are only 35 euros a night. I believe Senora lives in one half of the large apartment and lets out rooms in the other half.
