I am wondering if it is advisable to take our kids to a football match in Madrid? Do these matches tend to get out of hand? Our girls are 11 and 8.
It's perfectly safe. There will be lots of other kids in attendance as well. Most of the rowdier behavior occurs in the stands behind the two goals, where the "ultra" supports are located. But you wouldn't beat seated in those areas anyway.
You'll find matches in Madrid pretty well behaved...none of the soccer hooliganism that used to plague matches in Britain. It's quite an experience, so take advantage of it! You may need some good contacts if you want to get Real Madrid tickets. You should have an easier time if you want to go to an Atletico Madrid or Getafe game. Getafe's quite a bit south of downtown Madrid, but Atletico's stadium is just southwest of downtown on the metro line, at the Piramides stop....about 5 stops from Sol. It's right on the M-30 ring road...but don't drive!! Google the clubs to see if you can get tickets ahead of time.
Thank you so much for your advice! I will be sure to see a match while we are there!
