Madrid/Cordoba & Cordoba/Barcelona Travel

Hi,

We'll be in Spain this summer (2009). I was wondering whether I have to advance book my rail tickets for the AVE from Madrid to Cordoba or if I can wait until we're in Madrid. Same question for the overnight from Cordoba to Barcelona (which if I understand correctly does not go direct but transfers in Madrid).

We did a 3 week tour in 2007 (Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy)-- mostly by train-- and all booking was done on the spot at the ticket window; so I was wondering if the above trips would have to be any different.

Thanks,
-- Gerald

Others on this helpline may have more local knowledge of the situation, but in general:

  • Trains tend to get more booked up during the summer months, so reservations are more advisable

  • If you want a sleeping car reservation, those tend to be get booked up more quickly than coach seats

  • If you are traveling in first class rather than second class, there is in general a better chance you won't need a reservation, but there is no guarantee.

Gerald,
If you decide to book your rail tickets when you get to Madrid, I would do it at the Travel Dept. of El Corte Ingles, that is Spain's equivalent to our Macy's. There is one near Puerto del Sol. There is no extra charge for the tickets.

For Madrid to Cordoba, there are about 18 trains a day, so you can purchase them in advance. But if you are confident of your travel dates, you can get advance purchase tickets for 60% off the walkup fare. Fares range from 50-67 Euro, depending on what time of day you travel....advance tickets can be had for 20-25 Euro. You print your tickets at home and taken them with you.
For the overnight Trenhotel, I would also advise earli purchase for the same reason as above....and also because overnight trains are popular ways to travel, so book as soon as you are within the 62 day window. Neither Trenhotel (which leave Cordoba and arrive in Barcelona within minutes of each other) requires you to transfer in Madrid....the train remains the same thruout.
