Hi everyone~
My friend and I will be in Madrid, staying with her sister, for 9-10 days in early October. Does anyone have suggestions on how we should spend our time? We are interested in day trips. I heard Toledo is wonderful. I'd also like to go to France for a couple of days, by train. Does it seem feasable to any of you experts out there?
Thank you!
Day trips from Madrid can include Toledo, Segovia, Avila, El Escorial, and Salamanca....all great locations. For overnight trips, Granada and Sevilla are great spots. The train, to France, however, will expend a lot of time....unfortunately, there are no high-speed direct links yet. Most everywhere in southern France will have to be accessed via the rather expensive high-speed train to Barcelona, then several hours, and several changes, on regional trains across the border. With 9-10 days in Madrid, you could easily occupy your time with the above. Or you might consider a discount airline, which brings all of Europe within your reach for 2-3 day trips. For France, the only locations, though (besides Paris) are Lyon and Touluse via easyjet, and Marseilles via Ryanair. Personally, though, I would find such trips tiring, taking away from the "Spain" experience, and not really giving me enough time to do justice to the other destinations.
Jennifer, check out www.maribelsguides.com. She has some great tips and some hints on where to visit on certain days.
We did Segovia on our day trip and found it beautiful. You can go by bus or train, and its not expensive to travel to there.
Also remember the museums are free on Sundays. Maribel had some tips on which museum to hit first, and which entrance to use to bypass the crowds.
PM me if you want more info.
