Madrid Apartment rentals in Feb

My wife & I are looking for an "inexpensive" apartment rental in Madrid, and trying to figure if one neighborhood is better then another. Any suggestions are well appreciated!

The better areas in which to stay are the Opera, Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Huertas, Gran Vía areas, pretty much in that order as priority. As mentioned before, these are all good areas and very central to Old Madrid. The only area I'd avoid might be the Lavapies neighborhood or the section south of Calle de Atocha. This is not a "dangerous" by any stretch, but definitely "sketchy" after dark. Saludos, MadridMan @ you-know-where!
