We are currently in salamanca for 2 nights then to Segovia for 2 nights and on to madrid for 3 nights. Given the 100,000 protesters in the streets currently I was wondering if any Amricans can offer thier insights? What it is doing to public transportation? And if you think we should limit time there?
I'm not in Madrid, but I wish I was!! My suggestion to you is to go to Madrid ASAP. History is being made in the main square, the Puerta del Sol. I expect there will be some disruption to transit, but I wouldn't let that deter you in the least. The "Los Indignados" are protesting the same failed policies that the Occupy movement is - neo-liberal fiscal policies that concentrate wealth at the top and devastate the rest of us. What you will see in Puerta del Sol now you will see back home soon. View this as an opportunity to get ahead of the curve. Go, talk to the people in the streets, learn how the crash in '08 was far worse than here, and watch as a movement and culture of resistance is born. If things flair up, it will be the police who instigate the violence. Stay away from the police, stay towards the center of any protest you find your self in, and be self aware. Always have an escape route in mind, and move away from lines of police. Follow those simple rules and you'll be safe.
Don't miss this opportunity to witness history!! Have a great stay in Madrid!!
