I need to get from the Madrid airport to the Atocha train station as directly as possible. Rick doesn't address it in his book. Are they connected by Metro? Direct? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
No, requires one change on the metro. But it is simple and less than an hour.
There are several ways: Taxi, Metro, Aerocity Vans, and a new direct shuttle service (Think it began in November, just after my last trip). The Aerocity is good, you only get in the van. With the Metro (Subway) there are a couple of changes along the way, but easy with the new stations. The van service is only one euro (or there abouts) leaves from the airport, with one or two stops before arriving at Atocha. I will try it on the next trip. Check out the airport site for information. Also, check www.madridman.com for some postings about it.
New shuttle sounds good. I've used Aerocity before...it was cheap, easy, and fast. You can book it online before your trip as either a shared or private shuttle...private costs a little more. All of the details are on their website or on the gomadrid website under the transportation tab. The only drawback might be heavy traffic if you hit rush hour. Middle of the day...no problem.
Checked and found the proper name for the shuttle express: Airport Express http://www.emtmadrid.es/lineaAeropuerto/index.html 2 euros pay the driver in cash.
40 minutes depending on traffic
