Madrid airport connection to Atocha station

We are a group of 6 adults flying into Madrid midday on May 13, and wish to immediately travel to Seville via the AVE train. What is the easiest way to connect to the AVE from the Madrid airport? And would we need AVE reservations with or without a railpass (which we are still debating), and could we arrange the reservations when we arrive at the Madrid airport for travel that same day? Thank you for your help!

According to the metro map, you can take a couple of routes. To save some money, buy a multi-ride pass which can be shared between all of you. I think the pass is good for 6 rides.

Starting at Aeropuerto Barajas, get on the Pink line and get off at Mar de Cristal to transfer to Orange line going all the way to Goya. From Goya, hop on Red line and then get off at Sol, catching your last line, sky Blue to "Atocha Renfe" which stops inside the Atocha train station. If you stop at "Atocha", it exit out into the streets and outside the train station.

You can get tickets to Seville at the Renfe Desk at the airport , Atocha train station (line up at Venta Para Hoy which is the window to buy tickets on trains departing today) or Renfe's website. I would try to buy tickets beforehand to avoid tickets possibly selling out. However, I think you'll be ok winging it.

As Marlene noted, you must take three metro lines to get to Atocha. With all the stairs you will run into, taking the metro between Barajas airport and Atocha station can be a challenge with luggage. The easiest way would be to take 2 cabs (about 25 Euro each) or check out a shuttle like Aerocity. As for the train, yes, you will need reservations. If you book your tickets on line, then the reservation comes with them. If you have a railpass (usually not cost effective unless you're doing a LOT of rail travel) then you would need to visit a site like raileurope.com to order them. You could try waiting until you arrive at Atocha station, but you may not get on a train until later in the day. And reservations for rail pass holder are limited.
