Do you mean Madeira? It's a Portuguese Atlantic volcanic island, famous for flowers and wine. Used to have a reputation for being a "wrinklies" destination. I got within half a mile of it once - it was too rough for the cruise ship to enter the harbour! And I didn't want to be taken there in a small launch! Roger

Do you like walking? One of the main features of Madeira are the levadas, irrigation canals which wind their way round the steep hillsides. There are narrow paths alongside them which make for good walking, provided you have a head for heights. The island is volcanic, with steep hills and lots of tunnels and viaducts on the main roads. There are beaches and dramatic landscapes. The island is semi-tropical, with bananas growing, but you are also likely to find sea-mists and occasional torrential rain. A popular stop for cruise ships and for mature European travellers, especially the British.

Was there one day - beaches, interesting fisher ports, one famous church, uncontrolled toboggan ride down from the church over cobblestoned streets. madeirs wine. Good way to stretch your legs as a break from the ship. Why do you want to go there?
