Hi again! I'd like to bring my macbook pro (just purchased last year) and iphone mainly in case we come across free wi-fi and have international calling capability. We will be in Paris and Barcelona. I purchased the adaptor plug through this website, however, do I also need a voltage converter? I do not want to fry my electronics! Would anyone advise against bringing these electronics? Do you think I could just put them in a room safe while we're out and about?
Michelle, most electronics usable in the U.S. will now work in Europe, too. You need to be sure that the power block for whatever you plan to use states something along the lines of Input: 100 - 240 V, 50 - 60 Hz. If it does, all you need is an adapter plug. No voltage converter is necessary. I am 99% sure that the Apple products all meet this requirement.
Just returned from France and Germany with the same electronics. Really no problems and free wifi many places. Regarding charging - we used the converter package from the Apple Store, which worked well, but the batteries lost charge/drained much more quickly than in the US. It was explained to me that, even with the adapters, the batteries are charging much more quickly so also drain more quickly. Not sure if this is correct, but that was the only explanation we could get. No equipment got fried and it was good to have it with us.
All you need is a plug adapter. I have done MBP and iPhone with no problem. Lots of advice available here and elsewhere about turning off the data features of your iPhone, lest your phone bill be more than the rest of your trip. Sans blague.
