Take the T1 tram from central Lyon to the "Palais de Justice - Mairie du 3me" stop. You should be able to see a restaurant called "Bistrot du Palais" on the corner. A little way along the street running north from the same crossroads is another restaurant called "L'Ame Soeur". Both are great.

Hi Trudie, you are quite right to choose to visit Lyon, it is a truly wonderful city (lived there for 11 years and still miss it). For the restaurants, Lyon offers a huge choice, people eat out a lot, especially students and young people, since it is much cheaper than in Paris for example. And you will find food stores everywhere. Eating and cooking well is a way of life in Lyon. As for restaurant advice, it depends on what kind of food you like. For traditional lyonnaise cuisine, I would recommend La meunière, 11 rue Neuve, in the first arrondissement (very central). Very nice owners, good food. There is also Chez Mounier, in rue des Marroniers. It is really cheap and really good,a family owned place, not sure anyone speaks english however. Both those places would offer you a real local taste. Avoid the other places in rue des Marroniers and also rue Mercière, they are mostly tourists traps. Lyonnaise cuisine can be heavy on meat and offal however (bur there is also fish and lighter stuff), so if you don't like that you may want to try : -La Nef des Fous, 5 rue du Boeuf in the 5th arrondissement (vieux Lyon) serves great really creative french cuisine. I went there with American friends and they were thrilled. Definitely one of my favourite places. It is in the beautiful Vieux Lyon area, be sure to visit this part of the city, you won't regret it! -Danièle et Denise, in Petite rue Tramassac, offers french and lyonnaise cuisine, also a very good place. They have another restaurant in rue de Créqui, but be careful is it closed on week-ends and most of the summer.
-Le Jardin de Berthe in rue de Fleurieu serves huge salads and great desserts. It can be nice in the summer if the weather is hot and you want something lighter.

I was forgetting : those places tend to be popular, it's safer to make a reservation, even for lunch.
Enjoy your stay in Lyon!
