I am looking for an inexpensive hotel near the train station (short walk) in Luzern. Anyone have any suggestions?
Perry is exactly correct! I love Lucerne and think it's a beautiful city. However, the little lakeside villages like Weggis are wonderful in every way...dramatic beauty, fun boats rides on a crystal clear lake, mountains in the distance.
I love Weggis and my favorite hotel is the SeeHotel Gotthard. It's a great family-run hotel, beautiful views, interesting architecture, lake side location, and the absolute BEST restaurant we ever experienced in Switzerland. If you go for dinner you had better make reservations...
Thank you both! This is a great idea. I'll go to Google!
Elodie, I had the same issue for a September trip. I would recommend checking a map to see what villages interest you and then go to tripadvisor.com. I did but found that the hotels, in Weggis for instance, were expensive as well. Decided to opt for Hotel des Alpes in Luzern instead.
I also found hotels in Luzern very expensive, and I have not found anything in Weggi or Vitznau that are exactly "cheap." Last year we stayed in Rosli (recommended in Rick's book). It had a nice location, very cheap for Luzern's standard, but the rooms were rather old. There seems to be various camping options, some of which also has cabins. I tried to book for our July trip but they are already full.
First of all Switzerland is not in any way a cheap place. Secondly I never said or implied that Weggis or the other lakeside villages were cheaper than Lucerne. The villages have a different feel than the busy streets of Lucerne. Weggis is a lakeside retreat/spa type of place. It's beautiful, peaceful and relaxing and very very close to Lucerne. Maybe there are some bargain hotels there, I don't know.
My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Walderstatterhoff right outside the Luzern train station. We syed twice, it was lovley and clean and the breakfast a delight.
I found it from Expedia.com.
Right across from the staion. How convenient for us. Thank you!!
If you are willing to spend a little more, stay at the Hotel des Alpes....on the riverfront in the old town, next to the Picaso museum for about $170 US per day....one of the best hotels in Lucerne and certainly the best value in town.
