We will be taking a train from Brussels to Luxembourg city and have 3 days to see the Country. We bought a book and have some ideas of where we want to go and see and we will be renting a car. Are there some must see places to see and what is there to do? Thanks!
You bought a book. Which one? I have most of them so I could point you to specific things. When are you going? We just returned. Most areas except the southwest hold lovely things for us, maybe even the southwest but we haven't explored there. Three days isn't much. What are your interests? Scenery? Industry? Caves and tunnels? WWII? WWI? Battle of the Ardennes (Bulge)? Modern European government? Castles? Rivers? Patton? Wine? Romans? Trier? Mosel? Climbing? Walking? Horse riding?
We are going this June. We want to see scenery, Wine country, Mosel, WWI AND WWII sites, Waterfalls, castles, mountains, just beautiful areas. Thanks! I got Tom Skelton;s book off of Amazon.
Don't miss Vianden. Cute little town, overlooked by a large, beautifully restored chateau on the hill above a pretty valley. Well worth half a day. In a very pretty corner of the country. Oh, and no crowds of foreign tourists (some European tourists). I'd love to go back and explore that part of Luxembourg more.
We just returned from Luxembourg. You could certainly spend a day going through Luxembourg City. If you are interested in WWII, there is a good museum (I was 20 in 1944 - lots of videoclips of mostly civilian survivors telling their stories) in Bastogne, Belgium (but the Bastogne Historical Museum at the Mardasson Monument is closed for renovation this year). In Luxembourg, there are WWII museums in Ettelbruck and Diekirch. We went to the latter (Military Museum), which was also excellent. If you want to see these in depth, allow for at least two hours. You could also drive through the Moselle Valley or take a cruise on the Moselle from Remich.
The museum in Diekirch is amazing. I have never seen so much stuff in a building three times the size. Very well done, all easily followed in English, lots of first hand reports, soldiers of both sides, civilians, magnificent. Intentionally well balanced, and they achieve that well. As far as I am concerned, one of the top 5 war museums I have ever been to - and I have been to many. Overwhelming. You need to pace yourselves there. Take an audio guide. Very emotional. Make sure that you can do stairs. We love Luxembourg. Back in the '90s RS used to include Luxembourg and then dropped it. Why? Now that the G-A-S tours start next door in Trier and many tour folk arrive at Luxembourg he will reconsider?
We caught a city bus (downtown) to the WW2 cemetary where Patton is buried. Well worth the trip.
Hi Brendon, I agree with all the other comments on what to explore in this beautiful country. With 3 days, spend one in the capital itself, I posted some ideas under another post "Luxembourg in one day". But here is some additional suggestions: Head southeast from the capital to the city of Schengen - yes named after the famous agreement of a borderless Europe just because the EU politicians happened to make the deal when their ship on the Mousel river passed by this village - and turn north and follow the Mousel north on the wine route. You are in for a beautifull treat of winefields in both Luxembourg and Germany along the river. Go all the way up to Wasserbillig and from there continue to Vianden, visit the castle and take the chairlift to the hilltop for some stunning views. Another halfday trip is to drive all the way north to the pittoresque city of Clerveaux, visit the Monastry, the cathedral and the castle with it's small exhibitions of castles in Luxembourg. Finally, a day trip if you have time left, head east to the German city of Trier, the old Roman city with Roman fortifications and the oldest cathedral in Germany. I like Trier as a get-a-way from here and can easily be done in connection with the earlier mentioned trip on the wine route. have fun and all three days will be gone fast!
Hi Brendon, I will copy you my comments form another post on visiting Luxembourg in one day and add a few eatery listings. Visit the Casemates, old fortifications - interesting. Spend the time to stroll around the pittoresque downtown which is dedicated to mostly pedestrians to experience the capital. Watch the Grand Duchy Palace, The Notre Dame cathedral with it's crypt downstairs, and the famous square of Place d'Armes. To get a very good impression of what modern and old Luxembourg is like today, catch the hop-on-hop-off doubledecker bus which will take you through the old part of town (where you also will find most of the best eateries) before heading out to the business district with all its financial institutions and the notorious EU headquarters (may sound boring but is fascinating nevertheless). In case of bad weather, you could add a visit the museum of Villa Vauban. There are plenty of underground parking garages around the city - the Parking Place du Theatre or Aldringen/Place Guillaume being most centrally located. For eating, have lunch at Oberweis on Grand Rue with their delicious salads and outstanding desert sweets -very famous in Luxembourg. I love the chocolate Symphonie or their strawberry on a crusty base. Also the lemon tarte is delicious. For outstanding fish, try the restaurant Lorraine on Place d'Armes for dinner. have fun!
Just returned from Luxembourt City. Very clean and nice city. However, you can see most of the sites in a full day. The old city is in walking distance from the train station. The only problem we had was leaving. We were going from the City to Paris. When we went to get a reservation at 9 AM that morning, had to wait till after 5 PM for the next seat available. So get your reservation early.

The WW2 cemetery where Patton is buried is worth it. There's a nice hostel in Larochette. Larochette has a ton of hiking trails and very interesting castle ruins looking out over the town. We also spent a day just driving through the little rural towns this past summer. Wonderful.
