I'm heading to Luxembourg City next week and would really appreciate any tips anyone has on what to do. I will be there for only one day, and I'm having trouble finding out what the big attractions are. Any suggestions for tours or museums or can't-miss sites? Thanks for the help!
The overall layout of the city itself is the main attraction. When you arive, you'll see what I mean. The Old Town seems to spill over the side of a cliff into a large ravine. You can see here the remains of some old military fortifications. Although clean and attractive, and undoubtably a pleasent place to live, there's not a whole lot for the average casual tourist here, other than strolling around the city. If I recall correctly, there's a natural history and art museum in the lower town, but that seems to be about it for museums. The palace of the Archduke looks interesting from the outside, although I don't think you can tour it. Most of the rest of the city is fairly modern.
If you have a rental car, here's one very good reason to visit Luxembourg- the petrol prices are some of the lowest in Europe. You may notice the proliferation of service stations on the borders with France, Germany and Belgium.
There is a hop-on, hop-off bus tour.
The biggest attraction in Luxembourg are the gas stations who are cheaper than in Germany or France. Other than that you can walk thru the old town (upper and lower part) and I like the food there. The restaurants offer special 4 or 5 course menues for around €40 per person - some even include a bottle of wine or water.
The city Ramparts are extensive and have quite a history, but other then that, you can just enjoy being there. Sometimes, you just have to do the art of doing nothing.
Gracie..My brother and I went to Luxembourg city for a day trip, and enjoyed walking around the city. We arrived by train and walked to the center of the city and saw the castle, the ravine right below the city center, and ate at McDonalds, because that was the only place that was reasonable. Luxembourg city is quite expensive place to eat (even Pizza Hut). But in general just looking around was fun and pleasant gave us a general quick view of Center City. It is an unusual city. Hope you have fun. Jerry
My comments are probably too late for your trip but maybe for others going to Luxembourg. I haven't been to Luxembourg City but just outside the city in Hahn (and you can get there by bus) is the American Military Cemetary where Patton is buried along with many Americans from WWII. The cemetary is very moving.
