We signed up for the Eagle's Nest Historical Tour this summer and plan to arrive in Berchtesgaden a few hours before the tour, which starts at 13:15. Any suggestions for a nice place for lunch that is within about 15 minutes walking distance from the train station? Thanks.
You will love the tour. Enjoy every minute. There is a nice little restaurant connected with the Schwabenwirt hotel right across the street from where you check in and get the bus for the tour. If the weather's good, most people will be outside under the trees and umbrellas. When you come out of the train station, just cross the river heading toward the tour pick up point and the hotel/restaurant is on your left. If you want to explore the town, it is all uphill from the train station and the river, and I mean really up. Google map Berchtesgaden, and see what I'm talking about. Be sure to click on Satellite and you can zoom in on the hotel, Eagles's Nest Historical Tours and the train station. If you want to go up, through the park look for the Sonnenpromenade behind the train station. We didn't go that way, but it looks like there may be a path through the woods called Bahnhofweg that might get up into town a little faster if not easier than taking the street called Sunklergaesschen. There are some restaurants up there and you can see them on the map. If you have a few extra minutes, turn left out of the train station and walk along the river on Bahnhofstrasse. The bridges and falls are great. We were there when it had rained a lot and the river was raging. The very next day, it was calm and shallow. In the Satellite view you can see that the river is that greenish glacier melt color.
I was there in May. I didn't eat at the restaurant Lo suggests, but there was a little Italian restaurant a few meters farther from the Bahnhof. However, if you weren't taking the expensive tour, you could go up to the mountain earlier and have free time for lunch in the restaurant at the Nest.
I will second the restaurant Lo suggests. We ate there before the tour this past October. I had pork medallions in a mushroom cream sauce that was delicious...I'm looking at the pictue now...yum.
