Just to give you one more thing to worry about......the luggage weight restrictions are lower within Europe than the trans-Atlantic ones. I got caught on this once flying from Paris/London and had to pay overweight charges.
Do check the individual airlines to see what they will allow and plan accordingly!!!! But I flew to Europe via London and then immediately transferred to a Paris flight. My luggage was checked straight through to Paris so this rule did not apply at that time (2003). The problem was that flying from Paris, I was staying over in London and not flying directly to the USA. So if you plan on any flights within Europe (and not just low-cost ones), do beware of this weight restriction.
