Luggage on High speed AVE trains in Spain

We are visiting Spain in July and travelling most of the time in high speed AVE trains in 2nd class. We need to know what size luggage is practical and can be carried easily on the trains, is it possible to carry big suitcase like a 26" in the train with you or you have to checkin that size luggage separately.

There is no 'check in' for luggage. If you can carry it, you will be placing luggage at the end of the coach, above your head or maybe by your feet if at a table.

Its "you tote what you brung", I'm afraid. That's why most rail travelers pack as light as they can. If you can't lift it up the stairs onto the train, carry it down, manouver it into possibly full luggage area or over your head, or possibly between the seat backs (doesn't happen with airline type seating) you will be cursing the luggage through the entire trip. You will also need to carry it (them) up and down the stairs in the stations and Metros. I've yet to see anybody return and say, "Next time I will pack more stuff".

You will load and unload your luggage. There will be a luggage rack at the door. The trains do not have porters to lift the luggage, but if there is a problem, most likely someone will asssit. You will be able to see the luggage from your seat (if your seat fades that way). Never had a problem. The trains do leave exactly on time...no delays there.
The coach number and seat number will be on the ticket. The trains are an excellent way to travel.

Thank you all so much for the valuable information and suggestions! Will keep in mind to travel light as far as possible!

We travel with carryons for 4 week long vacations and even then end up wearing basically a few favorites. When on vacation it's not like at home if you wear the same couple of outfits. Bring the basics and mix them up a bit. From experience I would recommend not to bring a new pair of shoes that haven't been broken in. If you really need more space a 21 inch suitcase plus a tote is far easier to manage. Like Nigel says hauling luggage up and down stairs, cobblestone streets and in and out trains is exhausting. Plus the smaller bags are easier to keep nearby so you can watch them on the train
