My last day in Madrid I am traveling to Toledo for the day but don't want to drag my suitcase along. Are there luggage lockers at the Madrid train station? Also, on first class train travel in Spain, do they have a place to store your luggage. ie. can it be checked like on a plane.

Unless things have changed very recently, Atocha, the train station which serves the AVE in Madrid, has luggage lockers. Ask for the "consigna" or look for the signs. I've never heard of anybody checking luggage for a train trip, so don't know if it can be done.
