Luggage & ICE trains

Can you check bags on the ICE trains, or must you carry them on board and stash into a rack? Is there a fee to check bags?

Sean,

I've never seen any options to "check luggage" on any trains in Europe?

On rail cars with "open seating", there's normally a large rack at one end of the car for storing luggage. If the car consists of compartments, there are racks above the seats which will accept most "normal" size luggage. If trains are not crowded, I usually just place my Backpack on the seat beside me.

Those travelling with large "wheelie bags" often just leave them on the floor, either in the compartment or the aisle.

In Germany (if "ICE" is taken a hint that is the country in question) "checked luggage" and the accompanying "luggage cars" have gone the way of the dodo.

The only European country I know of which still has "checked luggage" as an option is Switzerland.
