Luggage and Burg Eltz

We will be in the Mosel Valley for 1 day next week. We will be travelling from Bacharach by train. The only hotel that I could find in the area was in Traben-Trarbach which means if we travel from Bacharach to our hotel then back to Burg Eltz we would have to add 2 hours to our travel time. We also want to hike up to the castle and don't want to take a taxi there. Rick Steves mentions eating at Schloss-Hotel Petry in Treis-Karden and if you do so they will allow you to leave your luggage. Has anyone tried this? Is this statement true?

It's about 32 minutes to Moselkern from Koblenz - you have to take the RB (slower train w/ many stops.) But you can take a fast train (RE or IC, also about 32 minutes) past Moselkern straight to Cochem, lock up your bags at the station, then return to Moselkern, an 18-minute train ride. Much faster than going to Traben-Trarbach. Then after Burg Eltz, stop over in Cochem to fetch your luggage on your way to T-T.

Here is the phone number for the establishment above. If you want to stop and eat there, give them a call and see what they say about your luggage. My guess is that they'll say yes.

Bacharach, Koblenz, Burg Eltz, and Cochem are all in the German state of Rheinland-Pfalz. For €25, you can purchase a Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket which will give 2-5 people unlimited travel together on regional trains and many buses in the state. So this ticket would cover your backtracking from Burg Eltz to the Koblenz Hbf.

Note that the Bacharach station is unmanned, so you will have to buy the ticket from the machine in the station building. The Rheinland-Pfalz-Ticket is one of the buttons in the two columns of buttons on the right hand side of the automat. Careful, there is also a Rheinland-Pfalz-Single, which is just for one person traveling alone.
