Lugano to Lucerne in five days in mid-April

In mid-April, after spending some time in the Lugano, area I plan to travel to Lucerne before taking the train to Zurich for departure to the U.S. I definitely plan to spend two full days in Lucerne that could be expanded to five. I'm mostly interested in hiking and eating. My question: On the way to Lucerne would it be worth my while to stop off in Bellinzano or some other easily accessed location for 2-3 days? Or, does it make more sense to spend the entire time in Lucerne? Larry
