We will be staying in Lucerne for 3 days in September. We would like to visit Tschamut which is the town where our Grandfather was born. What is the best way to get there from Lucerne? Thanks,
Mary Ellen
The Swiss rail site www.rail.ch shows a train going there. The station is listed as Tschamut-Selva so the station must serve both towns. The connection is Luzern to Göschenen to Andermatt to Tschamut-Selva. It takes 2 hours 43 minutes each way. You could get there in time to have lunch, walk around and explore before having to return to Luzern. This is well worth doing. We did a "roots" trip to the Swiss village where my husband's grandfather was born. We had an address for the actual home, and hired a taxi at the rail station to take us there. The taxi driver was very excited to hear what we were doing, and actually shut off the meter when she could not find it right away. Her first response whe I explained what were were looking for was was "Oh, you have Swiss blood!" And I responded, "No, that is my husband, but I have a Swiss heart!" She liked that. It turns out the family home had been donated to the community as there were no heirs remaining in Switzerland. They were having an art and architecture exhibit there at the time, and we got a very nice personal tour (most of which I could understand and translate for the rest of the family.).
Thank you so much for your reply. That was very very helpful.
