Is it impossible or just plain dumb? My husband, nine year old son and I will be in Switzerland only for a few days and will be based in Lucerne. We have one day (a Saturday) that we'd like to go for the Top of Europe trip-- we have even considered an organized tour to do this. Is this just too long of a trip? Would it be more sensible (and similarly awe-inspriing) to do Mt. Titlis or Mt. Pilatus from Lucerne that day? Please help! Also, can anyone advise whether or not the dog-sledding will be available? From all accounts I've read, the dogs are not in the Jungfrau region during Winter and I can't seem to find rides (short ones) offered elsewhere. Thanks for any help!
To check rail schedules to the top of the Jungfrau, head over to the Swiss Rail site:
Simply put "Luzern" as your origin, and "Jungfraujoch" as your destination and it will list all the connections you need to take.
Thank you very much for the opinion and details. I think we still may attempt it, though a long day.
We just loved to spend a day on top Mt. Rigi. The view is magnificent, soooo much to see on a clear day. Take the cogwheel train up, then walk to the top of the cable car and go down by cable car. You might want to combine it with a visit of the Verkehrsmuseum (Museum of transportation) which shows you in a great way how the locals conquerred the mountains etc. I think there is too much to do and see between Lucerne and Jungfrau to just pass all of it by train.
Keep in mind, the Alpine weather is extremely volatile, particularly in the winter and spring. You may travel several hours to see a nothing but cloud whiteout. I would be inclined to keep a flexible schedule and head for the mountains closer to Lucerne when you have clear weather.
