Lucerne or Geneva????

We will be going back to Europe next year and we will be coming from Paris. We wanted to go to Barcelona but found it is about 12-14 hours by train. We will be going to the Berner Oberland for 3 days and would like to visit one of thsese cities. I know Paris connects with Geneva in about 7 hours by train but Lucerne is closer to Interlaken. Which would you do for things to do and see? Thanks!!!

Lucerne for sure. Geneva is mainly for high end super expensive business travel.

Geneve is just over 3 hours from Paris by TGV, and Luzern is 4:40. There is little difference and time should not be the deciding factor. As Tim suggests, it is no contest. Luzern is lovely and has much to offer the visitor. Geneve is an expensive (and soulless) big city and international business center.

I say ditto. Geneve is a city with no soul. The old part of town was somewhat charming, but I would not go back.

This will be our 4th day in Luzern and we both love this town. Luzern kind of reminds me of a mini paris with all the outdoor restaurants, river through the city, and a lot of shops. The walk along the lake in both directions leads to some beautiful views of the lake, mountains, and gardens. There are so many swans in the lake along with ducks. Our hotel is on the lake 4th floor with great views of the lake and mountains. Of all the cities we have visited in Switzerland in the past 2 weeks this is our favorite.

Luzern also offers a choice of two great mountain/lake excursions, Pilatus or Rigi.

Even though you will have already been in the Swiss Alps, sometimes one can't get enough of them. From Lucerne, you can take the train and then the cogwheel train to the town of Engelberg. From there, you can take the Rotair (rotating gondola) up to Mount Titlis. Once up there, you can walk through the Glacier Grotto. Have fun on your trip.

Lucerne for sure my favorite city in Switzerland. Love Mt. Rigi!

Brendon, I agree with the others - definitely Lucerne! In addition to the day trips suggested by the others, you might find it interesting to take the local walking tour from the T.I. I found the Museum of Transport to be very interesting, and of course no visit is complete without seeing the famous "Lion of Lucerne". Happy travels!
