Lucerne Hotels: Trying to Narrow Choices

I am traveling to Lucerne this summer with my two teenage boys and my husband. We are considering the following hotels (we need a quad room so we are somewhat limited in hotel choices): 1. The Tourist Hotel (10 minute walk from train station) 2. Hotel Monopole (I know it is close to train station but seems expensive and we do not mind walking); Hotel Balm in Meggen (I know this requires a bus ride but it sounds like it might be quieter and nicer than staying in town) and the Hotel Bellevue. (Also a bit out of town but perhaps not so noisy as being in town.) Any advice would be welcomed. We are a very active family so walking or jumping on buses is not a big deal for us. Thank you, Kathleen Brunner

Will this be the first hotel and night you'll be spending after your long flight from the west coast? If so, choose the one closer to train station, pay a little more, but be ready to go the next day. However,....you'll be, as well as your 2 teenagers, very pumped and can probably act on adrenaline and could do any of your choices. What time will you be arriving in Luzern? This may make a difference. Good Luck, you'll really enjoy this City and Switzerland!

Thank you for your responses. We arrive in Zurich around 3:45 (having flown for 11 hours from LAX) and then take train to Lucerne so I see the advice of staying closer to train station rather than hopping on a bus. Also, I had not heard of the Hotel Stern so I did check it out. Unfortunately, all of the quad rooms are booked. My boys are 14 and 17th and tower over me,so I have debated getting them their own room but two rooms costs more than a quad by about $400 (total)and I would probably be concerned about them if they were in a non-connecting room.

The kids might like the Jail Hotel, but the quad room has two sets of bunks, so is pretty spartan. Rössli Guesthouse might be an option; they have quad rooms and you get free use of the pit door pool at the Baslertor down the street. Bottom line, Luzernnis expensive,,and there aren't a lot of hotels with family rooms. I have given up on trying to stay there with the kids along. Last time we stayed up onnRigi instead,,which was nice, but too far for you to travel after the long flight. How much time do you have in Luzern? Have you considered staying in Zurich, near the train station, your first night and taking an early train to Luzern the next morning? That is what we do, although our plane arrives a bit later, around 4:30. But by the time we get through the airport and into Zurich, we are happy to be done with traveling for the day.
