Lucerne Hotels

Any memorable recommendations for hotels in Lucerne, Switzerland? Anyone familiar with the Magic Hotel there?

Thanks!

Hi Kit,

We have visited Lucerne several times and have two recommendations: (1) Chateau-Hotel Gütsch or (2) Hotel Balances.
Hotel #1 is up on the hill. It's a big white building with a white tower - you can see the place from most points in Lucerne. At street level you can catch a fennicular to the Gütsch, which is also recommended. If you decide to take rooms elsewhere, at least have coffee/ tea and enjoy the view of Lucerne from there. Hotel #2 is right on Lake Lucerne. The rooms are romantic, old Europe and the restaurant is very good too.
We've taken rooms in two other Lucerne hotels on other occasions, but cannot recommend them. Sorry, Magic Hotel is unknown to us.
For your dining pleasure, Zum Wilden Mann and the Chateau-Hotel Gütsch are our highest recommendations.
Hope you have a great trip. Remember, you can take a lake cruise for next to nothing ... just catch a steamer at the dock near the train station.
Bon Voyage ! P.

Perry,

Thank you for the recommendations. I will definitely check them out. We are leaving for Switzerland on September 18th for 15 days.

They better be nice, for they're not your average hotel prices.

A few years back we stayed at the Hotel Central - very close to train station and easy walking distance to steamer. Typical European room - friendly people.

Perry's recommendations are both very expensive hotels, I personally could never afford them. My mother and I just stayed at the Goldener Stern on Burgerstrasse. The room was 150 CHF per night for a double, not cheap for my budget either, but the least expensive I could find in the city itself. Modest, clean, small, family-run, very good pillows and comforters. A short walk from the train station (or hop on a bus, two stops). It is almost right on the river, so we could go sightseeing and shopping and come back to the hotel to rest and then go out again. I would stay there again.

Thanks, Tim. I checked their website. I will definitely add the hotel to my "short list".
