I am having a difficult time finding a hotel in or near Lucerne. Anybody know of a place that might not be so popular? Or possibly out of town, because we'll have a car.
The hotel on Mt. Rigi is available, but the drive up there looks like a roller-coaster! Anyone familiar with it?

... You don't need to drive to the top of Rigi mountain. There's a famous cog train that makes regular runs - and very scenic, too. It's called the Vitznau-Rigi Bahn. The town of Vitznau is right on Lake Lucerne (no hills to climb). That's where you catch the Vitznau-Rigi Bahn. The bottom station is right next to the Lake Steamer dock in Vitznau. In Vitznau is the Park Hotel Vitznau (many stars hôtel) and several others (all on level ground at almost lake level). To investigate those hotels, suggest you go to www.google.com and type into the search box "Vitznau, CH hotels". Also, you could just take a steamer from Lucerne to Vitznau and ditch your car for a while. I'm envious of your trip. Hope you have a wonderful time... P

Did you try the Lucerne Backpackers? It is a nice hostel-type hotel about a 15-minute walk from town. They also rent bikes cheaply. The website is www.backpackerslucerne.ch/
