Deutsche Bahn offers something called a Länder-Tickets, which is a regional day pass. For under €30, up to 5 people (or parents and all children under 15) can travel anywhere throughout the region from 9 a.m. until 3 a.m. of the following day.

Any suggestions? also, any Hannover specific suggestions? We will be going Monday.

In Niedersachsen, I would go to the Harz Mountain park (SE corner of the state, just no. of Göttingen). Beautiful mountainous island of evergreen trees on an otherwise flat plain. Take the narrow gauge steam train from Schierke to the top of the Brocken.
