From the train station to the Marian Shrine(Can I assume that's your main reason for going?) is walking distance. Along the way there are plenty of souvenir shops. If I remember correctly, as you take the path to the Shrine, you will see signs to St Bernadette's family house. I don't remember the name of the hotel that I stayed in, but there were plenty of other accommodations available, although this year may be different, being the 150th aniversary. I think this website will help you: http://www.lourdes-infotourisme.com/uk/. Also, check out the Catholic websites, they may have more info for pilgrims on schedules, etc...

Tamara -

PEr the information Kent has provided - Gare Montparnasse is in the 6th district of Paris and is reachable by multiple metro lignes including 4, 6, 12, 13. It is a large station with many facilities.

Regarding entertainment for an 8 year old - I would recommend you bring your own items for them. There is not a movie for example. There will be a dining car for snacks and such, but I recommend creating a picnic type situation.

The train ride should the direct TGV not meet your timing can end up being as long as 6 1/2 hours. Keep in mind you are traveling nearly the entire length of the country to the far southwestern area.

This is the local town website for Lourdes - in English for you - includes accommodation information as well as information regarding the sanctuaries.
