We will be in St. Goar Germany from the 20th to the 23rd of December 2011 and would like to see snow. Is it too far to drive toward the Swiss border on a day trip? Is there a closer option to see snow?
If next winter is anything like this past winter, you should be able to look out your window. We were in southern Germany this past Christmas.New Years and it snowed nearly every day. I don't think you will have to drive anywhere.
Last year in this area, it snowed almost every day in December, but each year is different. The Taunus mountains, which are quite close to the Rhine, pretty much have snow on them all winter on the upper levels. Driving to the Swiss border as a day trip doesn't sound like a very good option. Even Bavaria would be closer.
If you want as close to an absolute guarantee as possible, take a trip south to the Allgau region of Bavaria. Even if there's not a flake of snow anywhere else in the country, there should be some above the alpine level of the mountains. This would be the easiest option from St. Goar. Last December, we had much more snow than normal. I live in one of the warmest areas of Germany, and even here we had fairly frequent snow coverings. But then from January onward, the weather was fairly mild and there was almost no further snowfall. In only 4 days, the chances of seeing a snow shower around St. Goar are fairly unlikely. I would agree with the others, your best chances of seeing a significant amount of snow (without traveling all the way to the Alps) would be to head up into one of the mountain ranges in the area. From St. Goar, the Taunus Mountains are to your east, the Pfalzer Wald is just to your south and west, the Odenwald is to your southeast and the Schwartzwald is a little further to the south. Conditions can vary greatly in just a short distance. For example, in late February, there was no snow at all on the ground where I live, yet after a 20 minute drive up into the Odenwald, the snow was a foot deep.
