We are planning a drive from Copenhagen to Brussels this August. We will be passing through Denmark, Northern Germany, Netherlands and Belgium. We are visited Amsterdam before, but never ventured outside the city.
We would appreciate suggestions for stops along the way. Where are the best 4 or five stops between these cities? We enjoy history, walking tours, restaurants and light hiking.
For Denmark, if you stay off the ferries and come down the Jutland peninsula: The viking ship museum and cathedral at Roskilde are worth a combined half day. Ribe, the oldest city in the country is a good place to spend the first night - - it has evening walking tours - - and more storks than you can shake a stick at.
When I look at the driving routes it would appear that the most direct route is to head south on E47 and take the ferry towards Germany. The Jutland peninsula would be longer, but, would it be more interesting? What are other good stops along the way towards Amsterdam?
The ferry runs every half hour and takes about fourty-five minutes. Assuming that you arrive just as one is departing and you miss it, the time for the whole route is less than a half hour more all the way to Brussels. Extra gas for driving the longer distance is less than the cost of the ferry. It sounds like you may be coming off a cruise and are just looking for something to do on the way home. The second-country drop-off fee on that car is going to be a couple or three hundred dollars. If you don't already have some appreciation for the area, you may want to look at some other kind of transportation. Additionally, Denmark isn't the cheapest place to poke around.
I would most recommend Kiel and Hamburg in northern Germany.
