We are planning to visit the Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castles and then heading toward Lucerne. Any ideas on a great bed and Breakfast or small hotels. Still searching for a place in the Lucerne area too !

We stayed over the border in Penswig, Austria at the Gusthof Schluxen. It was fantastic! One of the best places and only a very short drive to the castles. There is also an hour or so hike that can be done to get to the castles from the hotel. Watching previous Rick Steves episodes, I saw that he also stayed there when in the area. There is not much going on in the town so they all come over to the wonderful restaurant and bar at the hotel. Lovely place to meet the locals. And the view of the alps is perfect.

Near the castles in Schwangau is Hotel Rübezahl which has a great breakfast, plus many rooms have views of Neuschwanstein Castle

En route to Lucerne take the north shore of the Bodensee to Meersburg and stay at the Gasthof Bären. There are 2 castles to visit in this small town directly on the lake (look at photo on website)

In Lucerne I've stayed at the Hotel Krone for the good location, reasonable price, and the option to cancel with short notice without penalty because it's a Best Western member.
