Hi Rick- I just received a 3 year contract to work for the air force in Spangdlem (sp?). I've been looking at rental prices and I am in sticker shok. Any tips for finding long term affordable rentals? I love your show and your adventurous spirit!
Rosie, you're going to find rental rates in the Spangdahlem area to be high from what my son who is stationed there says. You will love the area (other than those rental rates) though. My son has seen quite a bit of Europe while he has been there. Take advantage of the opportunity!
Contact the installation housing office. If your contract makes you eligible for their assistance, they can help you find something.
The base is Spangdahlem, near Speicher and Bitburg, and is one of the most beautiful areas in Germany (my opinion). I lived there for 3 years and now live about 2 hrs North. As a matter of fact, I was just there yesterday. Anyway, you may want to check out www.thelocal.de, it's a news/information site for English speakers in Germany. The property tab lets you search for properties, including rentals, around Germany. Under 'county' select 'Rhineland-Palatinate' and the 'municipality' is 'Bitburg-Prum'. You may also want to write to the German National Tourist Board for information on the area. When we moved there, they sent us a great map of the area. If you have more questions, feel free to PM me and I'll help if I can.
Rosie, I talked to my son yesterday and his apartment rent is 850 euros per month. Three bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, living room - in Spangdahlem itself. I thought that was high but compared to some of the prices in one of the previous posts, guess not so much.
