long term rentals in France

We will hopefully be going to France for a year starting next April. We will be taking our 2 standard poodles with us and are looking for a furnished rental house. We are seeing lots of Gites offered by British folks which would be great, but it seems most of them are out in the country fairly far from train stations. We really want to be in the moutains, away from the heat which we are not used to. We also want to be able to ski easily in the winter without having to spend the night so a train trip is ideal.
we are finding some sites for the Pyrenees but nothing for the area close to the Alps , Grnoble, Lyon, Macon, Chambrey, etc. Does nayone know good sites to look on for our needs?

You do know that you will need a long stay visa from France for your stay.

Hi Yvonne Sounds like fun. I can't answer your question, sorry, but I was wondering if you might take any trips to the UK during your sojourn? If there's any chance, and you want to take the puppies, you may just have enough time to arrange the required chipping and passport papers that would allow them into the UK. Shame you're not a month earlier, with them, and you could have been visiting Crufts.

Kinda by definition, the gites you're finding are going to be country houses. (I'm assuming you're looking on the Gites de France website.) Other places to look are going to be: www.leboncoin.fr - the French equivalent to Craigslist
www.fnaim.fr (Although difficult to find a furnished rental here) You may also want to check out www.sabbaticalhomes.com although your timing isn't really right for this as you're not lining up with the school year. But you'll find stuff near Lyon and possibly Grenoble this way.

Diana Thanks for the sites, we had not used those yet. It does seem like if we want something in Lyon or Grenoble area, we will need to go there and look at houses and then bring the dogs over.

Amazingly, we are bringing our standard poodle to France next year. Don't forget to get a Pet Passport! It is sort of a deal to get it sorted out but worth it in the end. I am looking for a house in Torreilles or area of France. Anyone know reliable rental agents?
