I am wondering what the best deal is. The london travel card seems a bit expensive to me. I am thinking that maybe the oyster card might be cheaper in the long run?

We were in London for seven-days and when we did the math, the Oyster card was much more cost effective for us, especially since we used it to get into and out of London from Heathrow. I put 30 pounds on the card when we bought it (right at Heathrow) and it lasted the whole week with a pound or so leftover (and we used it a lot). So, my vote would be for the Oyster card.

It is the "wrong forum" but no worries.
Rick provides a good analysis of the various London transportation cards in both the England and London Guidebooks.
I decided on a PAYG Oyster Card and it was great! I topped it up once while I was there and still have some time left on it (will use it on the next trip).
