I have tried trains and planes to get from London to Toulouse for 4 of us, and keep ending up with roundtrip fares of $1000. Is this about the best I can do? Any smart ideas or secret passageways?

Suzanne, when I flew from London-Gatwick to Toulouse in January, and booking at the LAST minute!, I paid 84 pounds one-way. Take a look at www.easyjet.co.uk

You should investigate flying. That part of France is a very popular vacation destination for Brits, so I would expect there to be lots of competition on that route. And Toulouse is a major international airport.
