I'm thinking of visiting the Loire in early March, as a 4-day side trip from London. While it's not the ideal time to visit, does anyone have experience traveling to this area at this time of the year? What can I expect? Also, I'd love to hear suggestions on what town I should use as my home base, given that the weather will likely be cold, cloudy, and possibly rainy. I've stayed in Angers before (20 years ago!) so am looking for a something different. Thanks!
Chenonceaux - it may be too small for much evening activity but I would drive out of my my way just to stay and eat at La Rosaraie! Plus - just steps from the great Chenonceau chateau! Have fun.
Just back from Loire this wk. Make sure in advance that your chateauxs will be open during March. I like Amboise as a base. A car is a good idea also.
As others have said a car is great, to give you maximun flexibility.
Stayed at Chateau des Ormeaux this July and it was a wonderful place to stay. Not only was the location a great home base, but the chateau itself was Excellent.
Found it on Tripadvisor & it was the Best place we stayed in France, during our three week trip.
