Loire to Mont St. Michel, D- Day beaches,Honfleur

Traveling to France in less than two weeks! We have our accommodations for Paris, one night in Chartres and also our last night, but have 7 nights w/o reservations. Will we be ok to just find places to stay in the Loire area and the others noted, or do we need to make reservations? My sister and I are flexible, and don't want to be moving to a new place every day. We'll have a car after Chartres. Thank you!

Stephanie, If you want to visit the beaches of Normandy and the US Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, might I suggest a night or two in Bayeux and add the Bayeux Tapistry to your itenerary. Bayeux is about a half day drive from Mont St. Michel, where we stayed at a B&B in La Greve, the Hotel Gue de Beauvoir. It's kind of eclectic (the owner is an artist and his family dates back to that area for centuries). Have fun!

It galls me to urge somebody to make reservations, but Honfleur is pretty small. If you want to stay right around either the old port or the square, you ought to get on the stick. If you don't mind staying on the south end or down closer to the bridge don't bother, but the area will seem to suck if this is your first time - - plus good grub is sparse. You won't have any trouble anywhere else. Just take what looks good and don't feel like you have to have seen it in a guidebook.

Stephanie, in general a "flexible" traveler ought to be able to travel without reservations this time of year, with the possible exception of Mont St. Michel. On our September trip to the Loire, for instance, we used the TI in Amboise to find a very basic chambre d'hote on arrival in town.

I headquartered in Arromanches(,2-3 nights) which meant i was driving in both directions to the DDay beaches and MSM, but the TI was nice enough;there were hotel chains on the highway ( very inexpensive but clean Accor brand less expensive "formulae 1"..so you can fall back on those. We saw several chains in thr cities if you require AC, internetm elevators, etc,
DO see the Bayeux tapestry, and wander MSM when the tourists have left and the musicians come to play in a few of the rooms- lovely moments in the island, glittering gold sunsets.
