Logistics question around southeastern France

Hello everyone, Need opinions on best way to travel around France. We plan to be in Lyon for eight days to start our trip. Then we have ten days in between before we need to head to Alpe d'huez where we will stay for a week. Then we plan to leave there and head to Med coast. We love Nice but would be open to other towns on the Med to stay for three weeks. We then will finish in Paris for a couple of weeks. At least that is the thought right now. We had thought to spend the ten days between Lyon and Alpe d'huez in Provence. We like Avignon but maybe we could stay in Arles this time? However, logistically is it feasible to hop from Lyon to Provence then to the Alpe d'huez area and then to Nice or Cannes? Could we do trains/public transportation? I am thinking that we may need a car to get to Alpe d'huez and to next place. Also, I wonder if going to Provence for the ten days after Lyon is not as feasible to then go to Alps. Should we consider hitting Geneva or somewhere else instead?
I know this is very convoluted but would appreciate any thoughts on itinerary ideas. We are open to suggestions right now.

Hi, when we were in France it was difficult to get into the "good" part of Provence without a car. Lyon is well connected by train, also Arles, Avignon, Nice, Cannes. I would stay in Nice as a base, then visit Monaco, Ville Franche Sur Mer, etc. We stayed in Ville Franche which was quiet and beautiful but not a good base as the trains didn't run frequently. Nice would have been much better. Good Luck!
