We have two days to drive from Bastogne to Strasbourg. We would like to tour the battlefields around Verdun. Any ideas for a place to stay? Or would we have time to tour the Verdun sites enroute and just arrive one day early in Strasbourg?
WE were in Verdun last spring and broke all our rules and stayed in the Verdun IBIS budget for 50 euros. It was clean, neat, efficient and comfortable. Definitely to be considered.
What rules??? Ibis Budget / Etap is one of the all time good deals in the world. Some Ibis Budgets were formerly Formule1 instead of Etap. The rooms are identical except that the old F1's only had a sink in the room. Some of the F1's have been rebranded to Ibis Styles as well. I don't know how to tell the difference except by reading the property's description to see what it used to be.
I stayed at two different IBIS hotels in June and July of this year and have stayed at another one of their properties last year. I highly recommend them for a budget place to stay. All were clean, well staffed and had good restaurants. We will definitely stay at that chain again.
Keep in mind that there are three types of Ibis hotels. Descending order of amenity: Ibis, Ibis Budget, Ibis Style. There's a batch more chains in the Accor kingdom.
Thanks so much for your advice. I will check out the Ibis properties in the area.
We often stay at the Mercure hotels, a step up from the Ibis hotels, but still part of the Accor brand. If you are over 60, two stay for the price of one. There is also a free breakfast included for one of the people. We have also used the hotels in the Logis brand. They are more "mom and pop" hotels and individually owned. They use the Logis ratings. There is usually a nice restaurant so you can enjoy some wine and go to your room without having to drive. You could check both websites for hotels near Verdun.
we were just there. stayed in a chateau/hotel very near verdun. Chateau des Monthairons. nice dinner in the dining room, nice breakfast. only drawback is no air conditioning, but it didn't hurt even though we were there during the recent brutal hot spell, when it hit 99 degrees in strasbourg.
Thanks again for all of the advice.
It's been several years, but we also stayed at the Chateau des Monthairons. If you want something a little elegant, it makes a nice different place to stay. The cemetery and other sites are out in the countryside, not in town, so there's no real advantage to staying in Verdun itself, I feel.
