I've narrowed lodging down to Pension in Malerwinkel, Hotel Kranenturm and Hotel Zur Post. Anyone feel more strongly about one over then others. Costs are about the same. Thank You,
We have only stayed at the Pension Malerwinkel, in May 2009. Very attractive property. Nice staff and a good breakfast. We thought it the best value of our trip that year.
Lisa, I've stayed at both Hotel Kranenturm and Pension Lettie in Bacharach, and would certainly recommend both. The rooms were comfortable and the owners were wonderful. Although Kranenturm is right next to the railway tracks, I didn't have a problem with noise. The stone walls are more than a foot thick, so that provides some "insulation". I suppose the noise could be an issue with a room on the front lower floors and the windows open? Bacharach is an older and relatively small town, so I doubt that any of the lodgings there have an elevator. Happy travels!
We stayed at Hotel Kranenturm a couple years ago. LOTS of character and very nice owners. I'd stay there again!
I haven't stayed in Bacharach, but I have visited twice. I was very impressed with the setting for Im Malerwinkel. And it is far from the tracks. Some say train noise isn't a problem at places near the tracks, but I've heard the opposite from others. However, the noise of a through train wouldn't be a problem, just if a regional train from Koblenz came by, stopping in Bacharach, brakes screeching. But that doesn't happen in the middle of the night.
Avoid the Hotel Kranenturm. Worst night ever. LOUD!!!! The train screeches past every 15 minutes all night long. Have dinner there but SLEEP somewhere else.
I wouldn't stay in a hotel next to the train tracks. With windows open, it would be extremely loud. Go for Pension Malerwinkel. Lovely setting and a lot quieter.
Thank you for the suggestions! They were very helpful.
I also recom Pensione Lettie, great value, squeaky clean and great location.
We liked Pension Lettie (Lettie will do laundry for a reasonable price)and be sure to eat @ Altes Haus.

Great Thank You! I've booked a room at Pension Lettie for our stay.
Lisa, I'm sure you'll have a wonderful stay at Pension Lettie. She's a wonderful host and as someone else mentioned, she will do laundry if required (for a charge of course). She'll probably offer you a choice of breakfasts - a typical German breakfast or Waffles and all the trimmings. I chose Waffles and it was sure a nice change-of-pace after European breakfasts.
Having selekted Pension Lettie you will have a very pleasant hostess.
