On route to the Romantic Rhine region from Dusseldorf we are probably going to spend a night in Koln. Our plane arrives in Dusseldorf about 4 p.m. Based on some advice from an earlier post, we think we will travel as far as Koln by train, spend the night there, see the cathedral in the morning, then head south. Where would you spend the night? To kick off this trip to Germany, the Netherlands, and France, any recommendations for beer-halls, restaurants, and entertainment that evening before the jet lag does us in? I was just given Rick's 2011 Germany guidebook for an early Valentine (what a sweetheart!) and the book has some good suggestions, but I always like to get other travelers advice, too. Thanks.

Our favorite hotel in Cologne is the Coellner Hof, which is about a 10 min. walk from the train station. It is absolutely lovely with an old world charm and has just about the best breakfast buffet you will ever run across. Prices are reasonable too, at 81 euro per night for a double.
