Can anyone recommend inexpensive lodging for 4 near Neuschwanstein? We'll be coming from Austria and wanted to spend the night on our way to the Black Forest.

We will be staying at Beim Landhannes, which is about a 15 minute walk from the castles and from Fussen. I have never stayed here, but we will this summer! It is a working farm that rents out rooms. Here is the website:

Lizzie, that is a great way to go. The little towns right outside of Füssen are ideal for visiting the castles.

My wife and I along with our two kids stayed at the Gutshof zum Schluxen in Pinswang Austria in the summer of 2008. This is the perfect place to stay, and eat. We had a two bedroom suite with bunks for the kids. Breakfast was hearty, dinner was fresh and great, even if all you want is soup and salad. The bucolic setting is conducive to an afterdinner stroll. It was a quick drive to the castles, major thunderstorms when we were there, but would also be a great walk or bike trip over the old route along the lake in nicer weather. This route is part of the via Claudius, and old Roman trade route.

We just got home from europe and stayed in the Rick recommended Hotel Maximilian near Reutte,Austria. It is a few miles from Fussen, We were only 2 people but had a family room (2 rooms together actually) that would sleep 4. I think it was 70 euro including a huge buffet breakfast. One of the best dinners of our trip as well at their great restaurant. www.maxihotel.com

Peters walking distance from castle in RS guidebk. great view of castle from our room. very reasonable w/ a good brfast.

This is a nice, quiet place on the outskirts of Fussen as you head toward the black forest. The rooms were nice and the food was excellent and inexpensive.
